Policy issues that impact K-12 education. One way in which we stay informed of current policy trends is to stay up to date on current news stories at the local, state, and National level. As such, you will be asked to locate, read, and write a brief reflection on popular media articles related to educational policy. Sources of popular media include newspapers, trade publications, TV news programs, etc. Choose something published in the past six months…..

Summary: The article is summarized concisely and thoroughly. Structure is obvious, logical and complete and all essential components are addressed.

Depth of Reflection and Evidence of a Personal Perspective: Provides deep and rich connections, insights and analyses. Reveals evidence of a personal perspective within the reflection.

Connections Between Personal Reflection and Application to Future Practices: One or more connections made between personal reflection and application to future practices with specific supporting details and/or examples.

Points of Agreement and/or Disagreement: Delineates clear and precise points of personal agreement and/or disagreement and supports with specific details and/or examples

Writing Convention: Paper reflects an excellent command of writing mechanics and conventions.

Answer these Three questions:

1. In Chapter 5, Fowler talks about values and ideology. One of her discussion points is about the democratic value of equality. Using Figure 5.4 on page 98 of your book, give a brief response to how you think SEL policies impact one of the groups listed (racial minorities, women, low SES, etc.).

2. Do you think that SEL policies and standards might create any ideological conflicts? If so, why and among whom?

3. Thinking of, and referring to, Chapter 7 of Fowler, discuss who is defining the issue and shaping the agenda with respect to SEL. You can use a national lens
