Archival Assignment

Access and select at least two articles from newspaper(s) or magazine(s) in the post-Tambora time period.

Assess the newspaper(s) or magazine(s) as well as you can:  place of publication, publisher, audience, circulation statistics, and perhaps even political leanings.  What else does the periodical cover?  What else shows up on the page?

Assessment: LENGTH IN TARGET RANGE? (1000-1200 words)

Are the target articles archival?  Have you accessed periodicals from after Tambora in the US or Europe?

Do the archival articles discuss the volcano or the weather and climate?

Does this report assess the periodical (publisher, audience, circulation, place of publication)?

Have you given a sense of what else the periodical covers?

Is a Works Cited page included?

Describe and summarize the article(s) you’ve chosen.  What strikes you as being newsworthy?

do so would be like assessing the entire issue of Sports Illustrated rather than just the article Using strategies and tips gleaned from our exploration of Boston Public Library databases, access TWO NEWSPAPER ARTICLES published in the US or Europe between the summer of 1815 and the spring of 1819 that discuss either a volcanic eruption or the unusual weather and its effects.  You may choose two articles from a single newspaper or two articles from different newspapers.  The subject matter of your chosen articles should be relevant to our topic and somehow related to each other.

Equally important, assess the newspaper(s) as well as you can:  place of publication, publisher, audience, circulation statistics, and perhaps even political leanings—whatever you can find out.  What else does the periodical cover?  What else shows up on the page that includes your chosen article?  In other words, look beyond your targeted articles to get a sense of what reading the newspaper(s) was like.  To about what Joe Montana is up to these days.
