It is best if classroom assessment demonstrates principles and criteria so that its quality is high. Traditionally, assessment quality has been determined by the extent to which specific psychometric standards, such as validity and reliability, were met. These standards were originally derived for large-scale, published, standardized objective tests. However, for published tests the emphasis is on highly technical, statistically sophisticated standards. Thus, complex statistical procedures are used to provide estimates of validity, reliability, and measurement error. To interpret standardized tests properly, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of these properties.
